Way back when II
Nicky’s “Golden Oldies” from the Ocean Observer, 1970-71
-That extra man you see in the Food Mart from time to time, doing everything from pinching produce to carrying stuff out to the incinerator is volunteer Kyle Smith. I am coocoo about grocery stores admitted Kyle Smith I like to hang around with Dick Morris and his crew. Its my hobby you might say.
-Wall Street has its famed Dow Jones averages to indicate whether business is good or bad. But Ocean Shores has something far more accurate, the Doughnut Index. The Doughnut Index for the weekend was 380.0. That’s what the Hol n’ One Restaurant sold Saturday and Sunday 380 dozen doughnuts.
-Famed comedian Bob Newhart “the man with the buttoned down mind” headlines entertainment at the Ocean Shores Inn for a week.

Bob Newhart folks! Am I the only one old enough to remember him? I suppose part of it is that my ex-brother-in-law looks just like him. DON’T gET ME WRONG. I love you Shilo. It’s nice to have you as the anchor to our hotelling community. But whatever happened to that “big name draw” of this place that only seems to live in memory? It’s all economics right? A depressed industrial base removes $$ from people’s pockets and everyone in the community suffers right down to the local bell hop. People move away. Those remaining become “protectionist.” It becomes more fun to watch tv and complain about local government decisions instead of working on the hard stuff. Community building. Thank heavens the majority elects visionary government who bit the bullet and dare to remake this community with infrastructure improvements like roads, traffic patterns, water systems, etc. I’m probably labeling myself with my comments but I’m only going to complain about the people who complain. Now editor I can’t make your meetings to give feedback on the paper, but without ditching the hard issues, it should be recognized the relative power of your business for positive change. Getting people riled is probably a good start. Look into the power of GOOD NEWS as exemplified by a young boy in China who gets 5000 hits a day to his website.
