Council public comments on animal shelter closing
In the “public comment” of the meeting, several citizens who volunteer with animal organizations expressed alarm over this news.
“We have tremendous concerns about the animals who are lost or strayed in Ocean Shores,” said Lorna Valdez (not Debby, her sister, as originally posted erroneously), of North Beach PAWS, an all-volunteer organization.
“There are so many stray animals, especially on weekends of big festivals.”
“I think it was assumed that I and the 10 other volunteers would continue to take care of the animals,” said Jan Lane, volunteer coordinator for the City’s animal shelter. ” . . . when you let the animal control officer go, you also eliminated 11 volunteers.”

BigEd, I received the release well after my normal deadline, but felt it important enough to get as much info as space permitted. Will post the entire release now, excellent suggestion.
If Tom Scanlon had put the whole text of the news release of the opening of the Ocean Shores Animal Shelter, in the Wednesday August 5 edition of the NorthCoast News then Gary and secret squirrel would not have to banter back and forth.
Gary, why don’t you volunteer at the animal shelter again. We could always use good volunteers like yourself.
Tom, why don’t you publish the complete text of the news release that was sent to you?
Joe Mama
Joe?
Just watch your back….I’m out there somewhere….:-)) (that’s my dbl chin….)
Sounds good Gary, you’ll laugh when I reveal myself…
Ok, enough of this back and forth six days later. If you want to continue, you know how to get in touch with me.
Not at all. I’m blaming the idiot mayor who was elected. Not the citizens.
You seem to be blaming the citizens of Ocean Shores for the loss of the code enforcement officer. As in it’s us against them. We need to find an answer together.
Gary,
Here is a quote from your last statement….am I confused.
“You know not all people are bad, in fact most of us are decent human beings just trying to get by in life, I’m sorry you seem to think less of the citizen’s of Ocean Shores.”
What compelled you to write that? Where in my statement did I stated people were bad, or that I felt less of the citizens of Ocean Shores?
And Gary, I know you very well….I know you’ve “Been there done that……”
Feeling Nutty,
Secret Squirrel
I was obeying the law so you would not be overworked. You must not know me or you would know that a lot of what I say is tongue in cheek, and as I said, I was one of the very first volunteers at the shelter, trying to keep people like you out on the street so you would not have to clean up doo doo.
You know not all people are bad, in fact most of us are decent human beings just trying to get by in life. I’m sorry you seem to think less of the citizen’s of Ocean Shores.
Been there done that……..
Gary..
Gary,
I was enforcing the law with two less Police Officer’s on the street. That’s what I was doing. What have you done?
Secret Squirrel
Secretsquirrel can’t come out into the open? ” When you all allow cuts to be made” What did you do to save code enforcement?
Yes, the lame animal complaint calls will be ignored. That’s what happens when you all allow cuts to be made to your public safety departments. Don’t complain now…you had a chance to fight to keep them around.
As one of the very first volunteers at the shelter under Bob Thornton’s rule, I know that we can not let this happen. What is going to be done with menacing dogs? What is going to be done with stray cats and kittens? Are the patrol officers going to turn away from animal calls?
