Oh, the irony: one twice as big as the one pictured (ok, maybe I'm exaggerating) flew into my house last night, and, just like M.H. suggests, ended up on its back, buzzing and kicking and looking like a sci-fi mini-creature. I scooped it up in a cup and sent it off into the Ocean Shores night, where will it land next . . .?

It's a June bug. Disurb them and listen closely and they may hiss at you. Rather creepy if I do say so myself.... The good news is that they don't bite, they don't eat your landscaping, your pets can eat them (and they likely will try) and it won't make them sick, and they are too slow to follow you if you do decide to provoke them into hissing. One word of precaution... if you happen to see one airborne, don't let it land in your hair because it can be a little freaky trying to get it untangled. Oh, and if you see one on its back, don't assume it's dead. If they get up-ended they can't right themselves very easily and are just waiting for the curious onlooker to boot them with the hopes they land on their feet. And if you're faint of heart, for the love of God, don't squish one....
