St. Paddy’s Top 10
1. St. Patrick’s Day at Galway Bay: The best Irish bar on the whole, wide North Beach . . . O.K., it’s the only Irish bar on the North Beach. But it’s also one of the best places to have a pint outside of Samuel Beckett’s homeland. Always good music, consistently delicious food and the beer, oh, the beer. Have you tried Smithwick’s? Or Galway’s own signature brew? Three bands plus a piper. No cover charge.
2. Speaking of Beckett, read his famous (and famously misunderstood) play, “Waiting for Godot.” Aloud. To your significant other. Then, when he/she scurries away, continuing reading it aloud. To your dog. Then, when she/he scurries away, answer the phone, and continue reading it aloud. To a telemarketer.
3. Drink green beer. Ponder, “Did they use green dye for this, or Ocean Shores water?”
4. Go to the beach and read “The Third Policeman,” by Flann O’Brien. You’ve surely heard of “the big boys” from Ireland, your Joyce, your Beckett, your Swift. This fella is maybe the best of all the Irish twisted comic poets.
5. Take a drive up and down State Route 109, listening to the Pogues. When you get to Moclips, call it M’clips, and see if anyone notices.
6. Rent “My Left Foot,” and treat yourself to an Irish coffee while watching Daniel Day-Lewis’ amazing performance.
7. Venture out to Seabrook’s Front Street Cafe. As an appetizer, try the Spinach Hummus Dip. It’s green.
8. Walk up to a stranger at the bus stop and say, “Let us go forth, the tellers of tales, and seize whatever prey the heart long for, and have no fear!” (W.B. Yeats)
9. Go to Cadillac Jack’s, and belt out “Danny Boy” at karaoke.
10. Repeat the above at the Porthole Pub.
