Storm recovery resource fair
(press release)– Community organizations have partnered to create the first “Storm Recovery Resource Fair” to aid Grays Harbor residents with storm preparedness and recovery information during the winter season. The fair, which is free and family friendly, will be an open house held on November 22 from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Log Pavilion in Aberdeen.
“We wanted to commemorate the passing of a year since last December’s wind storms, and we also wanted to arm the community with information and resources that would help them continue with their recovery efforts and prepare them for another storm should it happen,” says Debbie Cool, event organizer and team leader for the Grays Harbor Disaster Outreach Services which has served thousands of residents this year by providing free emotional support, public education workshops and referrals to resources to aid in recovery efforts.
Seven or eight organizations including the Salvation Army, GH Long Term Recovery Organization, NeighborWorks, Coastal Community Action Program, GH Emergency and Risk Management, and Disaster Outreach Services will be present to hand out information to residents on topics ranging from how to weather winter storms to learning to cope with change after a natural disaster. Music, dance and craft activities will provide the family with entertainment during the day.
Participants at the fair will be asked to write a note on the “Appreciation Chain” to recovery and relief workers who have aided the Grays Harbor community throughout the year with recovery efforts. The chain will be made of strips of blue tarp, a rooftop symbol of home damage after last December’s storm. Signatures and notes will be collected to form a commemorative chain, which will be displayed during the holidays.
Cool says she hopes to see several hundred residents come to the event.
